Where’d She Go?

I always feel like a dork when this happens: I am sitting here, and when I look around for Zoe I can’t see her. So, panicking and thinking she’s off getting into something, I call her name… and out pops her head from under my chair, where she was laying peacefully. Doh! She’s such a good girl. :)

Hold It

Zoe’s getting a lot better with her need to pee everywhere, anytime. I haven’t necessarily been doing it intentionally, but now that she will signal me if she has to go out (as long as she’s trapped in the room with me), I’m not rushing her out first thing in the morning like I was. I’ll wake up, say hi to her, even pull out my laptop. She will scratch at the door when she needs to go, then I take her. Right now we all just woke up from a long nap, and she’s been laying on the floor chewing on a bone for fifteen minutes. So I’m very happy to see that her bladder is developing beyond the size of a pea!

Barking

Zoe is not a barker. Apparently she feels that Zeeke does enough for both of them - which he does. He’s a rather paranoid guard-dog - barks at everything. I’ve instituted a no-bark policy for her. The few times she’s thought of joining in on one of his barking campaigns, I’ve stopped her (with a simple “No” ). The result? She stares intently whenever she hears something, sometimes she gives a little grumbly growl and a “wuff” (which is okay), but at no point has she ever started barking maniacally along with Zeeke. Thank god. I couldn’t take two of them.

One exception: she barks loudly at Zeeke when she’s trying to get him to play with her. I tolerate only so much of that. But at least it’s not barking at imaginary sounds.

Attack Mode

One of the funniest things is watching Zoe play by herself. She’s a really self-sufficient puppy - granted sometimes that involves getting into things she shouldn’t, but a lot of the time she’s able to just play with her toys and chewies beside me. But the thing is, she doesn’t just play silently, she’s very vocal… the whole time she’s grunting and growling as she’s biting and shaking the heck out of her toys. I think she actually prefers playing with her toys alone; when I grab her rope or squeaky she sort of bites it, but she seems unsure of what exactly she should do - should she let mommy have the toy? So while I do try to get involved in her play, I also let her just vent her wrath on them in peace. ;)

Taking Zeeke Out

Zoe and Me

I am very proud of my little girl today. Zeeke needed to go out, so I got him all hooked on his leashes and collar, but decided not to put Zoe in her crate this time - she’s been doing well enough when Den takes Zeeke out, not rushing at the door though she does bark a lot. And sure enough when I opened the door and let Zeeke go through, she just sat on the couch and watched. I didn’t hear a peep from her from outside, though she could have been whining without me hearing. Then in the backyard with Zeeke I look up and see a white muzzle in the back window of the living room, watching us. When we moved around to the front yard, she moved to the front window (standing on the couch this time). She just watched. No freaking out, no barking - just watching. When we came in, she greeted us happily.

Yay for not freaking out!

Fetch!

I bought Zoe a new toy yesterday, it’s a “fox” with a big thick tail. Good for shaking. Well this morning I heard growling sounds coming from the hallway, and sure enough she was playing with it. So I joined her. I threw it down the hall and she ran after it, and when she grabbed it I said, “Good girl!!” When she brought it back to me I said “Good girl!!” and played tug for a few seconds. Then I said, “drop it,” and when she let go, again it was, “Good girl!!” I threw it twice more, and she brought it back both times! :D

That’s One Big Accident

Well yesterday was somewhat interesting. Zoe broke her no-accidents streak, and unfortunately it wasn’t with pee. My own fault, not taking her out on time.

But then later on in the evening, she’s all taken care of, the dogs are intermittently chewing on bones and playing with each other, and we’re on our computers. Out of nowhere comes the sound of water running. I stop dead and listen. Something’s leaking? Zoe definitely doesn’t make noise when peeing. I run out to the living room to find Zeeke lifting his leg in the middle of the room. Oh my lord - that was a ton of pee, and with how high up he is, it all just splashed everywhere. Den cleaned that all up, but I think I’m going to have to mop the floor.

Zoe is doing really well outside. On nice days there are people mowing their lawns - likely more for the leaves than the grass. It used to upset her, but now she just listens intently, stares, and then goes about her business. She’s still distracted, but at least she doesn’t freak out. I’m really proud of her.

Unfortunately I fear she’s not getting enough human interaction, and I’m not sure how to do that. With her not being potty-trained yet, I can’t take her to Den’s work and chance having her pee on their floor. We don’t really visit people, and we don’t have guests. Maybe I’ll just have to take her for more walks around the neighborhood, and hope we meet neighbors along the way.

No accidents in days! This is a good thing.

Paw Fights and Bonding

Zoe is a most entertaining family member. She does very well at occupying herself - whether with a toy, rawhide… or one of her latest favorite games is attacking her back feet and tail. It’s not an obsessive thing, so I’m not concerned at all, but it’s damn funny. She lays on her back on the bed, squirming and kicking her feet around, growling like a badger. When she manages to kick her nose, she bites her foot, chews a bit, then pauses. Then it starts again. Sometimes during the flailing her tail catches her eye, and she bites that too. And when she notices you watching, she just freezes, her eyes swivelling to meet yours, as if she’s trying to play it cool - with a paw in her mouth. So VERY cute.

I love how when I get up to go to the bathroom or check my email or grab a snack, no matter how asleep she is and how quietly I try to get up, she has to get up and come with me. She loves to get hugs, to snuggle up under my chest and lick my chin, to squirm and have her tummy rubbed and generally doted on. And of course I love to oblige. :) I really am the center of her world, and for that I am so, so thankful.
